You reach Canberra by bus or train from Sydney in about three to four hours, or by plane. In the city there are buses and a light rail; most sights are around the lake and easy to reach by bike.
Canberra has hot summers and cold, frosty winters. Spring and autumn are the most pleasant; in April and May the trees by the lake change colour. The Floriade flower festival takes place in spring.

The national war memorial is both museum and memorial, and entry is free. Stay for the closing ceremony in the afternoon, when one fallen soldier is remembered each day.
The parliament building is open to the public, and from the walkable roof you look out over the city. During sitting weeks you can watch the debates. Allow for airport-style security. Free entry.
The national art collection, with a large collection of Aboriginal art; the permanent exhibition is free. Outside by the lake there's a sculpture garden.
An artificial lake in the centre with a loop path for cycling and running. Especially beautiful in autumn, in April and May. Free.
A former workshop district with cafés, breweries and bars — Canberra's nightlife area. It gets frosty in winter, so dress warmly.
Canberra's Chinatown with cheap Asian eateries — the best place to eat for little money.
