How to spot a scam

Never pay up front. Not for a job, not for a room, and not for a van you haven’t seen. A deposit by bank transfer, crypto or gift card is the most common pattern.

• A job with no payslip: cash only and no payslip doesn’t count towards the 88 days — see Work & rights.
• A fee to get a job: legitimate employers and hostels don’t charge you for the right to work.
• A room offered only over chat: inspect it or ask for a video tour before you pay.
• Buying a van: run the AUD 2 PPSR check before any money moves — how-to in the van guide.
• Too good to be true: AUD 40 an hour for fruit picking doesn’t exist. Minimum wage and penalty rates are on the work page.

• Read the rules before you post. Many groups delete posts without a place or a date.
• Use the search: most questions have already been answered ten times over.
• Be specific: “farm work around Bundaberg from November, have a van” gets you further than “any jobs?”.
• Several groups at once: jobs are often gone within hours.
